Professor Jia-Hong Huang has dedicated his career to teaching, research, and social service. His research spans from hydrogen embrittlement in metals to thin film technology for transition metal-nitride (TMN) hard coatings. This includes film deposition processes, structural characterization, and tribological behavior, as well as the evaluation of mechanical properties such as residual stress and fracture toughness. Specifically, he has proposed several innovative methods for evaluating the mechanical behavior of TMN coatings. These include accurate stress measurement via the cos²αsin²ψ X-ray diffraction (XRD) and average X-ray strain (AXS) methods, fracture toughness measurement via the internal energy-induced cracking (IEIC) method, and the assessment of energy relief efficiency in metal interlayers using an energy-balance model. These methodologies have significantly advanced the understanding of hard coating mechanics and improved precision control in coating manufacturing. Furthermore, he pioneered a methodology combining the design of experiments (DOE) with single-variable methods to optimize coating deposition processes. His contributions to thin film technology have earned him international recognition and continue to significantly influence his peers in the field.
